Do Not Use Essential Oils in Your Cool Mist Humidifier

Based on how many people ask us about using essential oils in our cool mist humidifiers, it seems aromatherapy is becoming a new trend. However, YOU DO NOT WANT TO USE ESSENTIAL OILS IN YOUR HUMIDIFIER.  I repeat, do not add essential oils, of any kind, to your cool mist humidifier. We recommend using distilled water or tap water. *if you have hard water, or water with a lot of minerals in it, we recommend you use a filter. Adding essential oils to your cool mist humidifier could cause the tank to crack and the humidifier to malfunction.

Crane’s cool mist humidifiers are ultrasonic.

What does that mean? In the bottom of the base of your humidifier there is a white circular piece. This is called the Nebulizer. The Nebulizer vibrates to create water droplets. Then, the fan pushes these droplets up the mist chamber and out through the mist lid, and voila! Mist and humidity are brought into your home helping relieve cold and flu symptoms, improving the look and feel of your skin and hair and helping keep wood furniture from splitting — just to name a few reasons why humidifiers are so great. When you add essential oils, they clog the Nebulizer causing the humidifier to be unable to produce mist and the water tank to crack.

If you want to use essential oils, we would rather you use our warm mist humidifiers. Warm mist humidifiers heat the water and therefore don’t use ultrasonic technology. They also feature a medicine cup on the mist lid, which is specifically for essential oil use. We encourage cleaning your warm mist humidifier regularly with white vinegar and water, especially when using essential oils regularly. Another option is to use Crane’s White Personal Humidifier & Aroma DiffuserOr use Crane’s Soothing Aroma Diffuser.
